Miller’s Pharmacy in Cooper Texas

Miller’s Pharmacy has occupied its current location on the corner of the town square in Cooper Texas since some time in the 1930′s. Still operated by the Miller family and still largely the same as it was years ago. Miller’s, and much of the town square in Cooper, apparently changed very little in the past several decades. Like many other small Texas towns: a victim of rural flight. Thanks to a dearth of progress in Cooper Texas, Miller’s is an amazingly authentic 1930′s soda shop. Continue reading →

Meridian Texas County Courthouse

I’d been past the Bosque County Courthouse many times over the years, but I never thought much of it. I was aware that is had been modified in the 1930′s, and that in an earlier time, it had been a grand courthouse. I’d even seen pictures of the courthouse in it’s earlier form. But, pictures have the limitation of being two dimensional. The Bosque County Courthouse is 85 feet square by three stories tall and made mostly of limestone. It is very much three-dimensional. I just couldn’t conceptualize what the building looked like before being renovated in 1932. Continue reading →

Albany Texas Driveby Destinations

History

Albany was chosen county seat of Shackelford County Texas in 1874. County Clerk W. R. Cruger named city for his old home in Albany Georgia. Post office opened August 1, 1876. Established as point on the Marcy Trail in 1848 and later on the Western Cattle Trail. City expanded as a frontier shipping point when Houston & Texas Central Railroad built a depot here in 1881. By 1882 a church building had been erected. In 1883 an opera hall opened and the current courthouse was built. Continue reading →
